The number of wild horses in the area changes throughout the year as some of the herd contract diseases and die but for the most part this wild horse herd has adapted to the environment and are self-sufficient. There are an estimated 150 to 200 wild horses in the area. The wild horses of Kaapsehoop are mostly of the Boerperd breed.
